2/28 Angel Needs Some Funding Angels

Angel was picked up by our ACO in a ditch. She had a broken right leg and a nasty deep gash on her left ankle. She couldn't hardly stand but had the sweetest disposition. We had the vet perform the surgery and she is now resting comfortably in foster care. She is an amazingly sweet girl and we are happy we went out on a limb for her. Now we are facing raising the funds to pay for her surgery and xrays. We need to raise $500 to cover just the surgery, xrays and pain meds given upon initial treatment. The vet also wants to do another series of xrays in approximately 6 weeks to be sure the fracture healed properly. I have attached the chipin link that Ashli created for donations to Angel's care. As you know we are a very small organization with very limited resources, most are limited in this economy sadly. It is my hope that you can help me spread the word about Angel's Fund. Angel is with the Friends of the Shelter in Simpson Co. KY

1/31/10   Pup Found in Drain Pipe Needs Help

All we know at this point is that a woman in Mt. Vernon saw blood on her street and knew something was injured. She finally found an injured young dog stuck in a drain pipe where it had crawled after being hit. She had to get help the following day to get it from the pipe. She had no funds to vet the dog and has been trying her best to care for it, and has asked for help. He or she is on their way to a vet where we hope this little one can be saved; we hope all the trauma has not done more damage than can be rectified. We know we will need vettng funds. Please, help if you can. URKY tries to keep emergency vetting funds on hand, but there is always a need as soon as we find funds...always, always more and more need....thank you.
2/1 update:  She is at the vet who believes she has a back injury, though she does have feeling in her legs.  She is being x-rayed, hydrated, given antibiotics and painkillers....she is not in good shape, but we will know more later.  Thank you.
2/2 update:  She does not have a back injury, but has a fractured pelvis, bruises and abrasions.  Her pelvis is broken where the femur meets the joint.  She is absolutely terrified.  She is even fearful of going to the bathroom, and will eat only when the vets turn their back to her or leave the room.  She weighs 21 lbs, so is small.  The vets tell me she is the most traumatized, frightened little one they've seen in a long time.  She is on pain meds, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, super nutrients, and is getting a second round of bloodwork today.
2/9/ update:  You will not believe that underneath all the muck and pain, there is a little 23 lb Corgi mix!  Lila has thrived at the vets who have had her all this time (thank you for your donations!).  She has come out of her shell a wee bit and is becoming more relaxed.  She is still on medications, but left last night for a foster home!  She will leave Friday for Wisconsin where she'll be in rescue until she is 100% healthy and where she'll be matched with the perfect lifetime home!  Thanks to all who have responded with help, prayers, light and good wishes for this wee one.

Can you believe this is the same little girl!!!  This is Lila leaving the vets for her foster home.

Lila's (now named Macy) great update: 3/5
Per her rescue: There are so many sad stories and I wanted to share a great update with everyone.  You may remember about a month ago now there was a post for a puppy in Mt. Vernon KY- she was a stray, her mom was hit by a car and killed and now she was also hit by a car.  She'd dragged herself into a drain pipe where she lay for several days in 20 degree temperatures before a kind person rescued her and contacted URKY who got her to the vet clinic. That puppy is now named Macy and she joined our rescue three weeks ago tomorrow.  The vet clinic in KY confirmed she had a fracture in her pelvis and vision loss in her left eye.  They also said she was the most frightened dog they'd seen in a very long time.  She arrived afraid to be touched, afraid of everything and apparently unable to see out of her left eye.  Our orthopedic surgeon confirmed that crate rest would be the best option for healing.  Macy is just seven months old and her growth plates aren't closed yet which would cause a problem with plating.  Additionally the surgeon felt that such a difficult and painful surgery would not be necessary and indeed she is healing well and moving around better all the time.  The surgeon also counted 21 pellets in her hindquarters, back legs and abdomen!  This little baby girl has been shot too! The ophthalmologist determined that her vision issues were a result of traumatic brain injury, most likely concussion suffered from the car accident.  She has regained some of the vision in her left eye and the doc said that over the next three months she may regain more or even all of the use of the eye.  In any case it doesn't slow her down! The best part is that no one would recognize Macy now.  In just three weeks she has learned that she LOVES to be snuggled.  She loves to be petted, held, kissed and to have her ears and belly scratched.  She will give me kisses and climb in my lap and in fact sits and cries when I love up my other dogs and not her!!  She also very much loves other dogs and has taken up a big crush on my dog Moses.  The two will nap together spooning on a blanket and she gets so happy any time she sees him.  She loves inside and does not like outside so much - go figure.  She loves toys and will play for hours.  She will toss a ball, chase it, pounce on it and start over again.  Macy has had lots of visitors so she can learn that people in general are good. She still has a ways to go physically and behaviorally.  She is still afraid of my winter jacket, of too many people walking around and she will back away if anyone approaches her but if anyone kneels down she comes over for kisses and love stuff.  She will continue to work on making new human friends as she is shy at first and takes a little while to warm up.  But she does warm up! In short, I have been absolutely amazed at Macy's progress, at her spirit and at her willingness to learn and eagerness to engage.  When I think about her the word "Resilient" echos in my head.  She is just 7 months old and she's been through so much with losing her siblings, her mom, being shot, being on her own all alone in the world, and yet, she is a beautiful, silly, charismatic little imp of a girl with so much love and happiness.  She seriously walks around with what looks like a smile almost all the time.  It amazes me and I think there is a lesson in there for all of us!! Thanks to URKY for the great work you do and for saving Macy and thanks to everyone who donated to her chip in to pay the KY vet bill too!  I know they are all worth saving, but I wanted you to know, Macy is happy and loved and very much embracing her second chance and her new life! 1/12/2010  Dougal Needs Some Kindness - Lawrenceburg, KY

Dougal had been entering a woman's screened in porch for about a year, eating the cat food that was up off the ground.  One night she heard a racket and when she checked, he had fallen, trying to get to the food, and she realized he had a leg missing; it had been horribly mangled.  She was about to move to Lexington and was concerned about him being left with no food or shelter, and with this terrible injury.  Holly's Place loaned her a trap and when we got him, we found that he did have a terrible injury with most of his leg missing, and what was left of it was broken.  He was lucky to be alive.  He had to have what was left of the leg amputated.  He is now recovering at Holly's Place and making friends with the other cats.  He's starting to trust and lets caretakers get extremely close to him now during feeding time. His surgery has been expensive.  Please, you can help Dougal at the link right below.  Thank you.

1/12/2010  Mona Needs Mastectomy - Louisville, KY

This is from Chelsea’s Legacy.  Please, if you can, help sweet Mona!

Mona is a toy poodle rescued from Craig's List. She is 8-9 years old and probably used as a breeder dog. She was bounced around 2-3 homes and then the Craig's list post caught my eye-pregnant dog put outside to live under a trailer. Mona was taken into rescue by Chelsea's Legacy and has been in the perfect foster home. Mona was not pregnant and has been spayed. There were 3 tumors found in her left breast area and surgery has been scheduled for Wednesday, 1/13/10; we need help with her $550 surgical funding. Please help this amazing, loving dog have a chance at the life she never had in the past. She was used then just thrown away like she did not matter to anyone. Please help us and show Mona she does matter!! Thank you so much!

Update:  Funds were raised and Mona is doing well since her surgery! We'll post new pics soon!

1/9/2010  Jessie Needs Lots of Care - full of bullets!  Richmond, KY

Jessie was saved from certain death by a good samaritan.  A lady saw someone leading Jessie to the woods.  They were going to take her out and shoot her because of her yeast/skin issues.  The samaritan took Jessie and got her to a vet immediately.  Jessie has a curable skin problem, had worms, was skinny and had three oozing wounds, along with other minor health issues.  Turns out those wounds contained 22 caliber bullets.  Apparently they'd tried to kill Jessie before and hadn't succeeded.  My guess is they shot her, left her for dead, she came home, so they were going to do a more thorough job; but that is speculation at this point. Jessie is being healed and is on her way to a wonderful rescue, Magnificent Mutts, in IL.  Her vetting costs will be ongoing.  Please, help Jessie thrive in her new life. You can donate to her care below.

1/4/2010  KY  Leah Needs Leg Surgery-Louisville, KY

Leah was found on a roadside in rural KY.  Apparently she had been there for up to a week, as the person who called the county had driven past her and thought she was dead. The county contacted URKY and we found a wonderful foster mom who will care for her, and we are raising funds for her medical bills.  Leah's two front legs are destroyed; we don't know if she was hit by a car too, but we do know she had buckshot in her legs.  Her legs are going to require extensive orthopedic surgery and a long recuperation.  She is with a wonderful rescuer/foster mom and will get the best care. One leg has a Salter Harris type II fracture of the distal humeral condyl.  (Y fracture that is going to need significant repair.) The other leg- fracture of the distal radius/ulna.  Both will need to be plated.  She will have her surgery on Thusday the 7 of January, and we ask all of you keep your paws crossed for surgical success.  Thank you for anything you can do to help us pay for this surgery.  (1/7/10-Leah had her surgery today and came through it but is in guarded condition.  She will remain hospitalized and we'll know more on Monday.  More details to follow.)

1/10/10 Update -

Thank you to everyone who helped with Leah's rescue and to everyone who has donated for her care, as well as to everyone who is sending her well wishes! Leah had her surgery on Thursday.  Her surgery went well; however, the surgery didn't go as expected.  They found that the injuries were older than first thought, so there was more scar tissue than expected.  The vet wasn't able to plate the breaks because of the scar tissue.  He was still able to save both legs.  Leah currently has a K-E apparatus on each leg- which are stabilizing pins that go through the bones, come out through the skin and are secured to a metal rod to keep the healing bones immobile. She is back in her loving foster home. She is on strict confinement for 2 weeks and can only walk to go potty.  Her appetite is better today and she is more anxious to get out when it's time to go out.  She also got a new toy today and played with it a little in her crate. Leah goes back to see the vet again in two weeks. She is a great dog and has not stopped giving kisses and tail wags since she was found. She is safe now and her future is bright. What a great way to start the year!  She has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but we will try to make that road as smooth as possible for her.

1/24/10 Update -
Mona is having a hard time being still!  She wants to run and believes hopping on her hind legs is just fine.  Unfortunately, she has to stay kenneled to keep from damaging her surgery.  She went back to the vet a few days ago.  He is pleased with all her healing and says some parts are healing much better than he expected.  She does keep having a nagging infection at one of her external pin sites, but is getting great care and we believe that will clear up soon.
Her foster says she is pure joy in a fuzzy package....thank you so much. Jennifer, with Shelby Co HS will be finding Leah her perfect home when the time comes. There is a petfinder site HERE.

2/6/Update- Leah had a check up and might soon get her pins out!  We'll have details from her foster soon!

   Pre surgery         Post Surgery

1/28/10 update from Leah's foster mom:
Leah is a sweet, loving girl.  Her biggest challenge is staying calm!  Her bones are healing well.  She has had one minor complication- she has a pin track infection.  We are working to get the infection under control.  She is walking fairly well on the left leg.  The other leg is still very tender (partially because of the infection), but she gets around with it pretty well.  I have to continuously remind her that she isn't allowed to run and jump.  Little Leah is still on complete cage rest with the exception of going out to go potty.  She is anxious to get out and play and chase birds!  She will see the vet again in a week.  Leah is full of kisses and love.
Below you can see Leah's version of taking is easy!
